“In April, Olson paid $300 for an 8-second time slot on an electronic billboard near downtown Minneapolis. His ad was up for 24 hours, rotating with other ads on the billboard. The words “Hire Me!” appeared next to his website address and a picture of his face.”

I’m not suggesting that you go out and buy a billboard, but use this inspiration to help get creative in your job search. I love that Bennet stayed positive and passionate about finding a job. If you are narrow-minded in your career search you will get burnt out before you see results. It’s important that you stay positive and think outside the box during the whole career process.

This is a nice problem to have!

Are you managing your time to the best of your ability? It is is crucial to stay on top of networking in your job search, but it is just as important to be efficient and stay organized along the way. Don’t let yourself get too overwhelmed with interviews and applications. Take the time to sit back and really manage your career path. Remember, quality is always better than quantity.

Way to go Dan on securing your interviews through networking and job boards. I agree, it’s time to take a step back and make sure you’re not entering the land of diminishing returns.

She identified three new things she wanted to have in a dream job.

I don’t know about you, but I’m the type of person who has a success and moves on to the next goal way too quickly. I think this is part of why I’m a successful business owner, but I know this is a double edged sword. It gets me into trouble as well!! I’m trying to learn to celebrate those small wins along the way. I’m enjoying the journey, because I know that feeling positive and optimistic will help me continue to succeed long term. When I’m upbeat and positive I think more clearly and more creatively.

Come up with a new simple habit for yourself to help you celebrate your wins, however small or large they are. It doesn’t matter! Treat yourself to frozen yogurt, go to a movie, just do something you enjoy to really acknowledge and appreciate that win.

Watch my latest YouTube video where I discuss a USNews.com article that I was featured in about creative and alternative places that can be used as networking opportunities. In this video I give specific networking tips about how to make the most of your networking events.

There are so many places we don’t even think of as networking opportunities. I’ve had clients get interviews at weddings through their in-laws, through their daycare provider, at sports viewing parties at bars and through friends who knew someone was going to be laid off before the company posted their job opening. The bottom line is networking really can happen anywhere, as cliché as that may sound.

If you’re in the job market, act professionally wherever you go. Put your best foot forward just in case. That doesn’t mean be stuffy, just be mindful of the impression you are making. Have some good icebreakers prepared for any networking event. What is something you can say to approach people and start a conversation? Have a way to gracefully exit a conversation as well. Even by simply closing things out with “It was great to meet you,” “Can we stay in touch?” or “May I follow up with you in a few weeks?” Make a plan for staying in touch with them so you design how you can best help each other in the long run.

Here’s her message:

Wanted to let you know of my exciting new job.

Through a contact I made, I was asked to interview for 2 different positions with the South Carolina Dept. of Employment. Both weren’t ideal, but would have been a good foot in the door. I found out I didn’t get either of those positions.

Last week one of the women I interviewed with called me and said they have to fill a Case Mgr / Career Specialist position ASAP because the current Case Manager moved to a different department. The position is temporary and they will hire for the position at the end of May. I guess I made a good enough impression for her to think of me. I accepted the position the next morning. I don’t think I would have gotten this job in any other way. Even though I have all the transferable skills, they would have wanted social services experience.

So currently I work part time (28 hours) for Piedmont Technical College in the Dept. of Employment office helping people find jobs. It’s really exciting and I love going to work.

Just wanted to update you,
Beth

Congratulations Beth! She remained persistent in her career search and kept looking for her dream job. She didn’t settle, and was able to land something to get her foot in the door!

He said something to me that I often hear as a career coach and I wanted to share it with you. He said,

“Don’t just focus on 1-2 aspects of your life or what you want in a job because that was where I went off track before. I hadn’t looked at other areas of my life to help me determine the big picture of what I wanted in a career.”

You want to narrow down your career ideas to just a few in order to help you make a decision, but be careful of narrowing down too soon. If you focus too much on 1-2 things in identifying your ideal career direction, you could be narrowing your options TOO quickly and end up with something that’s not a fit.

Try to look at the big picture as well. Consider what would be fulfilling to you, in addition to what you’re good at and the salary you want to make. You also need to consider the right work environment and your personality type. When I work with clients there are actually 8 different things I have them consider on my Ideal Career Model to define their dream job. So think outside the box and look at the big picture. Once you have done that, you can narrow down your ideas from there.

One thing that everyone must consider when defining their ideal career direction is whether they are more introverted or more extroverted. This can be a make it or break it for whether or not your job is a fit for you. It is also a critical piece to figuring out the best work environment for you.

I had a job a long time ago that did not match with my more introverted nature. I was required to be extroverted for much of the day and I tell you, I was exhausted at the end of the day and wanted to go to bed every night at 8:00 pm! Not great for my personal life. So think about which way you lean. Are you more introverted or more extroverted? Remember we’re all a combination of both and you want to have the right balance of time with your peers at work and time alone. For example, I am 40/60 – 60% introverted and 40% extroverted so I can pose as an extrovert when I need to. But I require a lot of down, processing time during my day so working at home alone fits well for me.

What percentage are you? And does your current job match with that percentage, or are finding yourself drained at the end of the day?
