Job search tips for the holidays
Posted by: | CommentsAre you looking for some last minute job search help during the holidays? This article from the Atlanta Journal Constitution might be just what you need to get some inspiration while you’re on your job search: Counting your job search blessings.
Here’s a quick excerpt:
“For job seekers and those who have been struggling with finances, the exercise of counting one’s blessings may seem laced with irony. We’re nearing the end of what has been a difficult year for countless people. With unemployment stubbornly high, catastrophic housing markets trapping people in over-leveraged homes and disasters plaguing every corner of the Earth, despair is starting to seem like the logical way to greet each day.
Not so fast. If you’re in a job search, you simply can’t afford feelings of despair. Hopeless job seekers don’t find jobs for one simple reason: They stop trying. If you’re coming close to this place of self-fulfilling prophecy, it’s time to break the cycle. It’s time to start counting your job search blessings.”
When you count your blessings it can help get you in a positive job search mode, with the right attitude. Maintaining a positive attitude will help keep your energy up for things like networking, opportunities. It’s important to boost your energy and focus so that you keep moving forward. Don’t let yourself end up back on the couch.
One of my group coaching clients went to a church networking event recently and had great success. They got a lead on a job opening they hadn’t heard about and currently is in the application process. This person’s mindset and drive helped them move forward and make this connection. Churches can be a great outlet for a networking group. Attending church functions where you can socialize and connect with people is a networking opportunity that some people don’t think about. You’d be surprised at how easy it is to utilize networking. You just have to have the right attitude and keep moving forward.

Are you wasting your money on grad school?
Posted by: | CommentsAccording to a recent article in USA Today graduate school applications are commonplace when the economy is not doing well. A recent study showed that “the number of applications to U.S. graduate schools grew 8.3% from 2008 to 2009”.
More students are taking the GRE and it is estimated that this year might set record highs. Here’s an excerpt from the USA Today article discussing this trend. Read the full article: Considering Grad School? Advice In A Flat Job
Concern about the job market — and wanting to put off paying back student loans — were major factors for University of California-Davis senior Daniel Yeshiwas, who says he changed his plans to work for a few years before attending graduate school. He plans to apply for fall 2011.
“I don’t really know exactly what I want to do yet, but going to graduate school, it’s still moving me towards a career, and it’s something to further put off that question of what I’m gonna do for the rest of my life,” says Yeshiwas.
Grad school is a great investment in yourself. It does help you stand out and can also open up job opportunities that bachelor’s degrees don’t always provide. However a word of caution for current college students considering graduate school in the same viewpoint as Daniel. I have seen many people choose to go to graduate school for this reason. They don’t have any idea of what they want to do after four years of college. They don’t want that pressure of what are they going to do for the rest of their lives, and sometimes the are just intimated by the job market.
But here’s the problem… Read More→

Are you in a career crisis?
Posted by: | CommentsI was super excited to get some coverage in the AJC on Sunday in a great article “Jobs: The quarter-life career crisis” by Laura Raines.
I really can relate to the quarter-life career crisis as well as many of our clients. The quarter-life career crisis happens usually when a person is in their 20′s and 30′s. It’s when that person realizes that they are not in a job they are excited and passionate about. They are not in their dream job. Are you in a career crisis?
I am constantly reminding my career coaching clients about the importance of visualization. If you can’t see what it is you want, you can’t achieve it. The first step in finding your dreams is to be able to visualize it; to be able to define it for yourself. If you can’t think it, it can’t happen.
This article gives some other great tips. Here’s a quick excerpt about visualization – then click the link to read the full article:
Not everyone needs a total makeover, Crawford said. Sometimes people are just in the wrong company, the wrong job description or the wrong environment.
After nine years, Cassie Gokey felt in a rut working for her consumer packaging company. She had had numerous promotions, but the company culture had changed. Stressed by the hours and bored with the work, she felt stuck.
“Hallie asked me to visualize what I wanted my career and life to look like in 20 years,” Gokey said. “When she asked what the future me would think about my present job, the answer was obvious. I knew she’d say: ‘Just make a change. What are you waiting for?’ ”
Now in a business development role with AHP LLC, a Duluth-based manufacturer of disposable diapers, Gokey has moved out of her comfort zone.
“I like the challenges of working with an up-and-coming brand. There are a lot of unknowns, and that’s exciting,” she said.
She sees others in jobs they dislike. Some quit and go back to school. Others settle for the steady paycheck rather than take the risk of changing gears.
“The quarter-life crisis is pretty common,” Gokey said. “I guess the good thing is that it may be more acceptable to be in flux earlier in your career.”
